A Film About Gender Based Violence (2023)
This short and nasty film takes as its starting point the vignettes of women who had experiences of GBV during lockdown. I found the texts very depressing in their casual cruelty, mundanity and ‘normality’ and initially wasn’t sure how to make work form them. As I started to make shadow puppet characters and animate them a narrative emerged of the weight and impact of this everyday violence on the women. Also, the perpetrators began to emerge as rather pathetic and vulnerable with their own shame and fear as the main motivators in their actions. They then like deranged shadow cupids projected this onto the women using arrows that shot out of their mouths and eyes. In turn though the women found their own strength and resilience and could begin to deflect the violence that they experienced back to the men where it belonged. The film was made using stop-frame animation, shadow puppets and projections. A purifying fire was also used (that nearly resulted in burning my house down).
About the artist
Tony Gammidge is an artist, animator/filmmaker and HCPC registered art therapist. He has a particular interest in stories and personal narrative and in the idea of embodied story-making (stories that are made by hand as well as told). This is reflected in his own work, in particular his own films but also in his participatory work in prisons, secure units, mental health settings and centres for asylum seekers. He has been running these innovative animation and story projects for the last 12 years and has made over 30 films with participants in this time. Many of these films have won Koestler awards and have been screened in conferences, symposiums and in galleries and museums. The projects give participants the opportunity to make their own film and tell their own story, enabling them to take back control of their own histories. Many of the films that have been made tell of difficult and traumatic experiences. The hands-on animation process though enables these narratives to be told in a way that is safe and empowering. Stories of all kinds are central to his work and in particular to the philosophy of Animated Tales which he runs and which provides CPD stop-frame animation and embodied story-making courses and workshops.
